Earned value management software for construction projects

ConstructINS is earned value management software for construction: from each project’s cost register and site progress it works out earned value, the cost performance index (CPI), the estimate at completion and the variance at completion, and checks your own forecast against budget ÷ CPI. It is for contractors, developers and project controls teams in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the GCC, in Arabic and English. Schedule performance is measured on progress against plan.

What the earned value management software calculates

  1. Budget at completion and actual costBAC from the budget register and AC — the actual cost to date — from the same lines, by package or cost code.
  2. Earned valueEV = percent complete × BAC, from what the site reports.
  3. CPI and the estimate at completionCPI = EV ÷ AC. The EAC is your forecast where you give one, cross-checked against BAC ÷ CPI, and the gap between the two is shown.
  4. Variance and marginVAC = BAC − EAC, and the margin at bid, today and after delay damages, with revenue and cost kept separate.
  5. Schedule performanceSPI as progress ÷ planned progress, beside the critical-path forecast of the finish from the imported schedule.
  6. Where you read itOn the project’s cost screen, in reports, and from Ask — “what is our CPI on this project?”

Set up in your pilot

  • Planned value in money from your cost-loaded schedule, ETC and TCPI, and the S-curve for your own projects are set up in the pilot.
  • Riyal and dirham amounts on your own projects are set up in the pilot.

In Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the GCC

Egypt

Earned value in Egyptian pounds on Egyptian projects, with the Arabic terms Egyptian cost engineers use — قيمة الأعمال المنفذة، مؤشر أداء التكلفة، التكلفة عند الإنجاز.

Saudi Arabia

The same calculation on Saudi projects’ registers, in Arabic and English, with riyal amounts on your own projects set up in the pilot and each SAR amount shown in EGP and USD on hover.

UAE and the GCC

The same calculation for UAE and GCC projects in English or Arabic, with dirham amounts set up in the pilot.

How to choose

  • Earned value from real progressEV should come from what the site records, not a percentage typed into a spreadsheet.
  • The formula behind each figureCPI, EAC and VAC should each show how they were worked.
  • Your forecast against CPIA big gap between your EAC and BAC ÷ CPI is the conversation to have this week.
  • Revenue and cost kept apartMargin from contract plus variations against cost — never one number standing in for the other.

Frequently asked questions

What is earned value management?

A way to measure a project’s cost and schedule performance by comparing the value of work done (earned value) with what it cost (actual cost) and what was planned. Its best-known measures are CPI and SPI.

What is the difference between CPI and SPI?

CPI is earned value ÷ actual cost: below 1 means the work is costing more than it earns. SPI compares progress with the plan: below 1 means behind. In ConstructINS, SPI is progress ÷ planned progress.

How is the estimate at completion (EAC) worked out?

EAC is your own forecast where you give one, cross-checked against BAC ÷ CPI, with the gap between them shown. ETC and TCPI from your cost-loaded schedule are set up in the pilot.

Does it draw an S-curve?

Yes. It shows planned against forecast percent complete as an S-curve, beside the monthly cash flow — cost out, cash in and the running position. The S-curve for your own projects is set up in the pilot from your schedule.

Where does the data come from?

Your budget and cost register (Excel, CSV or your ERP), your site progress, and your schedule — imported from Primavera P6 or MS Project. Your ERP and P6 are connected in the pilot.
